Drainage for new homes, extensions and repairs

Once the trench is filled in, you’ll never see the drains under your house again. That’s why they need to be laid properly the first time, with the right falls, the right materials and a clear record of where everything runs. Getting it wrong usually shows up later as blockages, smells or water where it shouldn’t be, and fixing it then means digging up lawns, paths or driveways.

Drainspec is a family-run drainlaying business based in Whangarei and working right across Northland. We quote the job, do the work and sign it off, so you deal with one team from start to finish.

We look after

  • New homes on town and rural sections
  • Extensions, sleepouts and minor dwellings
  • Builders and designers who need a reliable drainlayer on the job
  • Homeowners with a broken, cracked or root-damaged drain
  • Buyers of older homes who want the drains checked before they commit

Our residential drainage services

Most residential jobs fall into one of the areas below. Some sites need a combination, such as a new home that also needs stormwater and subsoil drainage, and we’ll talk you through what your section needs.

New build drainage

We lay the wastewater and stormwater pipework for new homes, from the house to the septic system or approved discharge point. Everything is laid to the consented plans and tested before it's covered. Working to the build programme means your builder can keep moving, and your paperwork is in order when it's time for sign-off.

Extensions and alterations

Adding a bathroom, a sleepout or a new wing usually means extending or moving existing drains. We tie the new work into what's already there and check that the whole system still has the fall it needs. Planning this early with your builder or designer avoids surprises once the foundations go in.

Drain repairs and replacement

Cracked, collapsed and root-damaged pipes are common in older homes, particularly those with their original earthenware pipes. We find the problem first, often with a camera, so we only dig where we need to. The damaged section is then replaced with modern pipe that's far less prone to cracking and root intrusion.

Stormwater drainage

Roof water and surface water need somewhere to go, and in Northland's heavy rain that matters. We install stormwater pipes, soak pits and swales that meet council requirements and carry water away from your house.

Subsoil drainage

Soggy lawns, wet retaining walls and damp foundations are often caused by groundwater with nowhere to drain. Subsoil drainage using Novacoil and drainage metal collects that water and carries it away. It's one of the simplest fixes for a section that never seems to dry out.

Drain camera inspections

A drain camera shows exactly what's going on inside the pipe, so you only dig where there's a real problem. It's a good way to find the cause of drains that keep giving trouble. It's also a sensible check before buying an older home, and pre-purchase inspections come with footage, photos and a written report.

Septic systems

For rural sections without town services, we supply and install septic tanks and secondary treatment systems, mainly from Duracrete, along with Hynds and Wade. The right system depends on your soil, section size and consent conditions. Our septic page explains the options in more detail.

What affects the cost of drainage work

Every site is different, so we quote each job individually. The main things that affect the price are:

  1. 01 Access whether a digger can get in easily, or the work needs a smaller machine or hand digging
  2. 02 Ground conditions clay, rock and high water tables all change how long a trench takes
  3. 03 Length and depth of the drain runs longer runs and deeper falls mean more digging and more pipe
  4. 04 Type of work a full new build system is a bigger job than a repair or a short extension
  5. 05 Consent and inspections some work needs a building consent and council inspections before backfilling
  6. 06 Location travel time for sites further from Whangarei

Quotes are free in Whangarei and the surrounding area. For remote Northland sites, we offer a drainage report for $499 + GST. It gives you a clear picture of what’s needed before any work starts, and your builder, designer and council can all work from it.

Looking after your drains

Well-laid drains should last for decades, and a few simple habits help keep them running freely:

If you notice slow drains, gurgling or bad smells, get in touch early. A small problem caught now is usually a quicker and cheaper fix than one left until the drain blocks completely.

  • Only flush toilet paper. Wipes, even "flushable" ones, are a common cause of blockages.
  • Keep fats and oils out of the kitchen sink.
  • Keep gully traps clear of leaves and soil, and make sure the grate sits above ground level.
  • Plant trees well away from drain lines, as roots find their way into pipes.

Residential drainage FAQs

Can’t see your question? Call us on 021 0236 9667.

Yes. Drainlaying is a regulated trade in New Zealand, and sanitary drainage has to be done by an authorised drainlayer. Our work is carried out by a certifying drainlayer, so we can certify it ourselves without bringing in anyone else. You can check any drainlayer’s status on the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board public register.

New drainage usually needs a building consent, and for a new home it’s normally part of the house consent. Repairs, like-for-like replacements and some minor alterations don’t need one, as long as an authorised drainlayer does the work. We can tell you which applies to your job.

Yes. We work alongside builders on new homes and extensions and fit the drainage around their programme. Getting us involved early means the drainage is planned before the slab or foundations go in.

It depends on the size of the house, access, the ground and the weather, so there isn’t a typical figure. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe with your quote. We work to your builder’s programme, so the drainage is ready when it’s needed.

Yes, we work right across Northland. Quotes are free in Whangarei and the surrounding area. For remote sites, we offer a drainage report for $499 + GST, which saves an extra trip and gives you a clear plan before work starts.

A drainage report sets out what drainage your site needs before any digging starts. It’s most useful for remote Northland sites, where a separate quoting visit isn’t practical. Your builder, designer and council can all use it to plan the job.

Yes. A drain camera inspection shows the condition of the drains before you commit, and you’ll receive the footage, photos and a written report. If the camera finds a problem, we can quote the repair so you know what you’re taking on.
