See inside your drains before you dig or buy
Drains are buried, so most problems stay hidden until something goes wrong. A drain camera inspection shows exactly what’s happening inside the pipe, without digging up the lawn, driveway or garden to find out. It’s the quickest way to know what condition your drains are in and where any problems sit.
We carry out drain camera inspections for
- Buyers who want the drains checked before they commit to a house
- Drains that keep giving trouble, even after they've been cleared
- Homeowners planning an extension, sleepout or new build on an existing section
- Older homes with original earthenware pipes
How a drain camera inspection works
A drain camera is a small waterproof camera on a flexible cable. It’s fed into the pipe through a gully trap, inspection point or other access, and sends live footage back to a screen as it travels along the drain. That footage shows cracks, breaks, tree roots, sags and build-up, and where along the line each one is.
Because the problem can be pinpointed, only the damaged section needs to be dug up if a repair is needed. That saves time, cost and disruption compared with digging along the whole line to look. It also means any repair is based on what’s actually in the pipe rather than a guess.
Pre-purchase drain inspections
Drains are one of the few parts of a house you can’t see at an open home, and a standard building inspection usually doesn’t look inside them. Many older Northland homes still have their original earthenware pipes, which can crack or let tree roots in as they age. A pre-purchase drain inspection shows what condition the drains are in before you go unconditional.
With a pre-purchase inspection, you receive the camera footage, photos of anything that needs attention and a written report. If the camera finds a problem, we can quote the repair, so you know the likely cost and can factor it into your decision or your negotiation. If the drains are in good shape, that’s one less thing to worry about.
Finding the cause of recurring drain problems
A drain that keeps blocking, running slowly or smelling usually has an underlying problem. Tree roots, a cracked or sagging pipe, or a join that’s moved can all cause trouble that comes back no matter how often the drain is cleared. A camera inspection finds the cause, so it can be fixed properly.
Drainspec doesn’t offer drain unblocking or urgent callouts. If your drain is blocked right now, you’ll need a drain unblocking service first. Once it’s flowing again, we can inspect the line and find out why it keeps happening.
Before you build or extend
If you’re adding an extension, a sleepout or a new home on a section with existing drains, it helps to know where those drains run and what condition they’re in. A camera inspection before work starts avoids surprises once the digging begins. It also gives your builder and designer the information they need to plan around the drains, or to include any repairs in the job.
What the camera often finds
- Tree roots growing into pipes through joints and cracks
- Cracked or broken earthenware pipes
- Collapsed sections of pipe
- Sagging pipes that hold water and collect debris
- Build-up of fat, wipes and other waste
- Old drains that aren't shown on the property plans
From inspection to repair
If the camera finds damage, we can quote the repair or replacement. Our certifying drainlayer can dig out the damaged section, lay new pipe and certify the work. You deal with one business from finding the problem to fixing it. Residential drainage →

It’s a good idea, especially for older homes. Drains are hidden, and problems like cracked pipes or tree roots can be expensive to fix. A camera inspection before you buy shows what you’re taking on, and you’ll receive the footage, photos and a written report.
A drain that keeps blocking usually has an underlying problem, such as tree roots, a cracked or sagging pipe, or build-up that’s never been fully cleared. Clearing it again only buys time. A camera inspection finds the cause so it can be fixed for good.
No, Drainspec doesn’t offer drain unblocking or urgent callouts at this stage. If your drain is blocked, contact a drain unblocking service first. Once it’s clear, we can inspect the drain to find out what caused the blockage.
