Pumps for rural water and wastewater systems

On a rural property, the pump is the part of the system you only notice when it stops. No pump means no water at the taps, or a septic system that can’t move effluent to the disposal field. We supply, install and replace water and septic pumps across Northland, for both new systems and existing ones. Davey is the main brand we supply, and we’ll match the pump to your system.

Pump failed? We offer urgent same-day callouts, so if you’ve lost water or a septic alarm is going off, call us directly on 021 0236 9667.

Give us a call if you have

  • No water pressure, or a pump that won't stop running
  • An old or noisy pump that needs replacing
  • A new water tank that needs a pump
  • A septic system that needs a pump to move effluent uphill or to a distant disposal field
  • A septic pump alarm going off

Water pumps

A pressure pump moves water from your tank to the house and keeps the taps and shower running at a steady pressure. The right pump depends on the size of the household, how many taps might run at once, and the distance and height between the tank and the house. A pump that’s too small struggles to keep up, while one that’s too large wastes power and wears out faster.

We can supply a new pump, replace an old one or set up the pump for a new water tank. We’ll make sure the pump suits your tank, your house and how you use water. Connecting a pump into your water supply is plumbing work, so that part is done by a licensed plumber, and we can arrange one or work with your own. We also supply pump covers, which protect the pump from rain, sun and debris, and pressure tanks, which help keep the pressure steady and stop the pump turning on every time a tap opens. Septic and wastewater pumps

Not every septic system can rely on gravity. Where the disposal field is uphill from the tank, or a long way from it, a pump is needed to move the effluent. Pumped septic tanks, such as Duracrete’s pumped tank, come with a pump and a high-level alarm that warns you if the level in the tank gets too high.

Secondary treatment systems also use a pump to send treated water to the irrigation lines. If a septic or wastewater pump fails, effluent can back up in the tank, so it’s important to get it looked at quickly. We can replace failed pumps in existing systems as well as installing them in new ones. Septic tanks → Secondary treatment systems →

Signs your pump needs attention

If your pump stops, check the power supply and the switch at the board first. If the power is on and the pump still isn’t working, turn it off and give us a call. Running a pump that’s struggling can burn out the motor.

  • Low or surging water pressure
  • The pump running constantly, or turning on and off every few seconds
  • Unusual noise, heat or a burning smell
  • A septic pump alarm going off
  • Water or effluent pooling where it shouldn't be

Replacing a failed pump

Drainspec replaces pumps rather than repairing them. An old pump with a worn motor is rarely worth fixing, especially if it’s been working hard for years. We’ll check the pump and the system around it first, so you know the pump is the problem before you pay for a new one. If the old pump was the wrong size for the job, we can suggest one that suits your system better.

What affects the price

Every job is different, so we quote each one individually. The main things that affect the price are:

  1. 01 Pump type and size water pressure pump or septic pump, and the capacity needed
  2. 02 Like for like or a new setup a straight swap is simpler than changing the layout
  3. 03 Access how easy the pump is to reach
  4. 04 Pipework and fittings whether anything else needs replacing at the same time
  5. 05 Electrical connection what's needed to power the new pump
  6. 06 Location travel time for sites further from Whangarei

Quotes are free in Whangarei and the surrounding area. Sending a photo of your existing pump and its label helps us quote faster. We’ll let you know if anything else needs attention while we’re there.

Pump FAQs

Can’t see your question? Call us on 021 0236 9667.

Start by checking the power supply and the switch at the board, and make sure there’s water in the tank. Common causes include a tripped circuit, a faulty pressure switch, a blocked inlet or a worn-out motor. If the power is on and the tank has water, turn the pump off and call us.

A pump that cycles on and off every few seconds usually points to a leak somewhere in the system, a problem with the pressure tank or a faulty pressure switch. It puts a lot of strain on the motor. Get it checked before it burns out.

The alarm usually means the pump has stopped or the level in the tank is too high. Cut back on water use in the house, check the power to the pump, and call us. Don’t ignore it, because the tank can overflow if the pump isn’t working.

Often, yes. We can supply a like-for-like replacement, or suggest a better-suited pump if the old one wasn’t the right size for the job. A photo of the existing pump and its label makes this quicker.
